The Artist Project: Portraits of the Real Art World / New York Artists 1981-1990
I placed my entire being into this project for ten years. I felt that nothing could stop me, but at the same time I was at my subjects' mercy. I was like a dog going after a treat: I went after the next picture as if my life depended on it. I scratched and whined at doors, howled for attention in my pursuit until I was granted access or was beaten away with sticks and stones only to return again. I accepted the moral responsibility for my pictures in terms of the effects the taking of them had on my victims. In capturing their likeness I was after what they could not give: identity and environment. My response in the end could only be to be as purely truthful as possible, and perceive without prejudice.
